Roster of Mashburn Educators

Mashburns have had a long connection with education.

  • Mashburn Elementary School in Forsyth Co., GA was named for Dr. Marcus Mashburn, Sr.
  • The Mashburn Theater of Douglas H.S. Douglas Co, GA was named for Shirla Mashburn.
  • Mashburn Hall at Central Arkansas University was named for UCA alumnus and benefactor Dr. J.D. Mashburn. The hall houses the College of Education.
  • Jamal Mashburn, who was an All-American Basketball player at the University of Kentucky, donated $500,000 to its scholarship fund.
  • Mashburn Hall of Dalton State University (GA) was named after John Willis Mashburn who established The John Willis Mashburn Charitable Trust to advance endeavors that boost higher education and economic development.
  • The Mashburn Gallery at the University of Houston was named after Joe Mashburn.
  • The Barbara Mashburn Scholarship gives annual awards for residents and high school graduates of northwest Arkansas who are pursuing postsecondary studies in Vocal Music or Drama at the University of Arkansas.
  • The Ingram Building at West Georgia University was named for Dr. Irvine Sullivan Ingram. He was a direct descendent of the Sullivan-Mashburn family of Burke, Co, NC and Fannin Co., GA.

EDWARD MASHBORNE (b. 1676) operated a school at Sarum, N.C. He taught reading, writing, arithmetic and principles of the Christian Religion. He is the second known schoolmaster in North Carolina. 

Many of his descendants have followed his profession. The following roster is just a small list of Mashburn educators.

Marshburn, Joseph – professor of English, University of Oklahoma, expert in the English Renaissance,

Ingram, Irvine Sullivan (1892-1981) – .the second principal of the Fourth District Agricultural and Mechanical School in Georgia, who then became the first president of West Georgia College when the A&M School was turned into a college. His term as the first president of West Georgia College (now known as West Georgia University) lasted from 1933-1960. The Ingram Building was named for him. He was a direct descendent of the Sullivan-Mashburn family of Burke, Co, NC and Fannin Co., GA.

Morris, Katheribe Riviere Mashburn – Elementary and Middle School Teacher, Math Specialist. Pickens County, Georgia. Teacher of the Year

Mashburn, David (b. 1976) – Social Studies Teacher, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Teacher, Instructional Technology Specialist, Assistant Principal, Principal. Pickens County GA, Forsyth County GA, Fulton County GA, Gilmer County GA.

Mashburn, John (b.1957) – Band Director. Dalton City GA, Colquitt County GA, Forsyth County GA. Named by School Band & Orchestra Magazine as one of the 50 Best Band Directors in the nation.

Mashburn, Linda Carnes (b. 1950) – Elementary Teacher – Carroll County Schools. Middle School Teacher – Language Arts ; Master’s in Science. Assistant Principal then Principal at Villa Rica Elementary. Principal at Sand Hill Elementary. Taught GED classes at night at West Central Technical College/Carroll Tech

Carnes, William “Billy” Joseph (b. 1977) – Special Education, Physical Education, Coached Football at Newnan High School in Coweta County, GA. Newnan High School, Coweta County, GA. Bay Springs Middle School, Carroll County, GA. Billy is the son of Linda Mashburn Carnes.

Mashburn, Maurine (b. 9/24/1923) – Business Education, Librarian. Groom Public Schools, Amarillo Public Schools.

Mashburn, Rita P. (b. 1956) – Math Teacher, District Math Coach/Coordinator, Assistant Prinicpal. Calhoun City GA, Gwinnett County GA, Carterville City GA, Marietta City GA. She was recognized as an outstanding math teacher by Georgia Senate Resoluation SR-479

Mashburn, Ronald (b. 6/16/46) – Electronics Engineering Teacher, Department Head, Professor. Texas State Technical College, West Texas A & M University, Frank Phillips College. Taught a total of 40 years.

Mashburn, Steve (b.1955) – Band Director, Instructional Technology Specialist, District Office Administrator (Fine Arts/Online Education). Gordon County GA, Morgan County GA, Cherokee County GA, Cartersville City GA, Forsyth County GA. Implemented the nation’s first Learning Management System (LMS) for use of all classroom teachers in a major school system.

Mashburn Tonya – Assistant band director at Lambert HS Forsyth Co., GA

Thompson, Ann Pierce (b. 1951) – Middle School Language Arts, Middle School Social Studies, Technology Specialist. Wake Couny, NC. Ann is a direct descendant of Edward Mashborne

Mashburn, Shirla Wells – age 94, of Whitley Drive, Douglasville, passed away Monday, February 6, 2006. She was born September 17, 1911, in Bartow County, Georgia to the late G.C. Mashburn and Nora Wells Mashburn.

Miss Mashburn attended school in Adairsville and graduated as Valedictorian of her class, she also graduated from Bessie Tift College and the University of Georgia. She retired after a 42 year career in education, having taught school in Bartow County, Taylorsville High School, Douglas County High School and serving as counselor at Turner Middle School.

Miss Mashburn was recognized as the First Star Teacher at Douglas County High School where she was chairperson of the math department and taught the first advanced math course required by Goergia Tech for entrance. Her career in Douglas County began in 1942 where in addition to math, she taught science and drivers education. She was also sponsor of the DOCOHAN, counselor and registrar. Following WWII, she taught veterans in night school.

In recognition of her distinguished career in education at Douglas County High School, the main building is named in her honor. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Douglasville where she taught Senior Adult Sunday School and was a member of the choir for many years.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Lamar Mashburn. Survivors include; Kathryn Shehane; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Mashburn; nephews, Larry & Joellen Mashburn and Jeff & Judy Mashburn; a niece, Suzy & Dan Gloth; great nieces, Kari Smith, Christine Mashburn and Kelly Gloth.

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, February 9, 2006, at 3:00PM from Hightower’s Memorial Chapel with Dr. Milton Dwelle officiating assisted by Rev. Cecil Clegg and Rev. R.V. Wells with words of remembrance by Dr. Tim Wheeler, Vic Mulinix, Dr. Carolyn Ward and Kathryn Shehane. Music will be rendered by Miriam Kesler. Pallbearers will be Dr. Tim Wheeler, Bobby Williams, Ronnie Bailey, Vic Mulinix, Horace LaFavor and Ronald Camp. Interment will follow in Sunrise Memorial Garden. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday from 12 noon until the funeral hour. Hightower’s Memorial Chapel of Douglasville has charge of the arrangements.

Joseph Mashburn – Dean of the Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture at the University of Houston in Houston, Texas since August, 1998.[1] This came shortly after being inducted into UH’s Architecture Hall of Fame in 1996.[2] Mashburn stepped down from his post at Hines in December 2009 and was replaced by Patricia Oliver.[3] He has continued to teach at the college.[4] He was also named to the American Institute of Architects‘ College of Fellows in 2010.[5]

He received his Bachelor of Architecture from University of Houston in 1978. In 1982, he earned a Master of Architecture degree from Texas A&M University.[5]

He served as an assistant professor and graduate design coordinator at A&M from 1982 to 1988 and in 1989 moved to Virginia Tech.[6]

He has received the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture Design Award, the Virginia Society AIA Award for Excellence in Architecture, and the Committee of Heads of Australian Schools of Architecture Design Award.
